Its always been bit weird if you have a girl friend or a Boy Friend for the first time and you love each other so much and you always wanted to kiss him/her. But there is always some feeling of shyness over powers you when you want to go for the first time. You always dreamed of kissing her/him, but when you are there with him/her in person it feels bit weird to ask him/her for a kiss, it feels like come on this cannot be really happening, the person is right in front of you and you can make your dream come true any time you want and its not that the person will take it wrong. But still something stopping you to go ahead.
So how to go about this? and kiss your loved one? when you both hang out next time make sure you both are in a place where no one is around, make sure there is some privacy otherwise it will feel bit weird to ask for a kiss or go for a kiss for the first time. Proximity with people moving around may spoil the energy field around you so just make sure there is no one around.
Start with some conversation, there is no need to advice on this one lovers can keep talking on any rubbish useless stuff but its still useful as it makes you understand the other person a bit. As the conversation gets going make sure you give it a pause and gather some courage, come on you cannot miss this chance to make your dream come true, there is no one around and only your lover and you and no one to disturb you around, there can be no better chance than this, plus make sure you don’t ask the other person “can I kiss you?” or “I feel like kissing you can I?” and all those stupid questions just gather some strength and if needed close your eyes and start kissing. When you feel yes this is it I don’t want to wait any longer, just throw yourself up and kiss.
Once you are through with your first kiss then you will find you are no more shy for the second one. its just a block on your way once you break it then there is no more barrier stopping you for the next time. So start kissing if you are about to kiss for the first time gather some courage and go ahead and break the barrier stopping you and most important of all have fun!

I agree with you that it is only on the first step that makes you feel shy and awkward but once you move the barrier, second and the following kisses would be just a piece of cake.
